Are Yantian and Shekou the Same as Shenzhen Port? All 4 Compared
Yes and no: Yantian, Shekou, Chiwan and Da Chan Bay are separate terminals inside the Shenzhen port zone. Compare them by factory location, cut-off, live service and total cost.

Short answer: yes and no. Yantian, Shekou, Chiwan and Da Chan Bay all belong to the Port of Shenzhen, so “Shenzhen” on a quote or a bill of lading can mean any of them. But they are separate container terminals on opposite sides of the city — Yantian in the eastern port area on Dapeng Bay, Shekou, Chiwan and Da Chan Bay in the western port area on the Pearl River estuary — and a booking leaves from one specific terminal. Ask which one before you arrange trucking: it changes the first-mile cost, the receiving cut-off and the sailings you can catch.
The western port area also includes Mawan and several smaller port areas, and Guangzhou’s Nansha sits just across the water. This guide compares the four container terminals named in the title, puts them side by side in one table, walks through two hypothetical factory cases, and ends with how to choose — plus when a neighbouring port fits better.

The four Shenzhen terminals side by side
Shenzhen’s container operations are split by geography — east side vs west side — because that split determines which factories can truck to which terminal cheaply. The table is a starting point for the conversation with your supplier and forwarder, not a fixed rule: the live service for your week decides.
| Terminal | Where | Factories it usually suits | Trucking and gate-in to check | Confirm on the booking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yantian (盐田, YTN) | East: north-west shore of Dapeng Bay | Longgang, eastern Dongguan, Huizhou | First-mile quote from the factory address; receiving cut-off; gate appointment | Named carrier and rotation, direct or transhipment, destination terminal |
| Shekou (蛇口, SHK) | West: north shore of Shenzhen Bay, Nanshan | Nanshan, Bao’an, western Dongguan, Zhongshan | Whether the container gates in at Shekou or Chiwan; receiving cut-off | Transhipment port and connecting vessel; for LCL, the consolidation warehouse |
| Chiwan (赤湾, CWN) | West: next to Shekou | Same catchment as Shekou | Same as Shekou — confirm which of the two the booking names | Same as Shekou; some services split between the two terminals |
| Da Chan Bay (大铲湾, DCB) | West: Bao’an, north of Shekou and Chiwan | West-side factories; compare with Shekou/Chiwan from the actual address | Receiving cut-off and current capacity on the live schedule | Whether the service you need calls there for your week |
Yantian (盐田港, YTN) — east side, deep-sea specialist
Yantian sits in Shenzhen’s eastern port area, on the north-west shore of Dapeng Bay. It supports deep-sea container operations and is convenient for factories on the eastern side of Shenzhen and nearby areas. It commonly appears on quotes for transpacific services to North America, Asia → West Coast South America and Central America services, and deep-draft vessels. Confirm the live carrier rotation, cut-off and whether the booking is direct or transhipped for the requested week.
Shekou (蛇口, SHK) — west side, mixed cargo
Shekou is on the north shore of Shenzhen Bay in Nanshan district, across the bay from Hong Kong. It handles a mix of intra-Asia and some deep-sea services, some Asia → Latin America services (mostly via transhipment) and LCL consolidations for west-side shippers. Shekou is far closer to Chiwan than to Yantian — a truck between Shekou and Yantian usually crosses the whole city.
Chiwan (赤湾, CWN) — west side, adjacent to Shekou
Chiwan is immediately adjacent to Shekou, and the two are often quoted together as SHK/CWN, forming the west-Shenzhen container cluster. From a factory’s perspective they are usually interchangeable; what matters is which one the booking actually names.
Da Chan Bay (大铲湾, DCB) — west side, newer facility
Da Chan Bay is on the west side, in Bao’an, further north than Shekou and Chiwan. Its intra-Asia, feeder or deep-sea options should be checked on the live schedule, together with its receiving cut-off and current capacity against the other terminals.
Are Shekou and Yantian close to each other?
Not really. Both are inside “Shenzhen” administratively, but geographically they’re on opposite sides of the city:
- Yantian is on Dapeng Bay in the east of the city.
- Shekou is on Shenzhen Bay in the west, across from Hong Kong.
The cross-city trucking time and cost vary with the factory address, gate appointment and traffic. Compare the first-mile quote with the live sailing cut-off before choosing either side.
Two hypothetical factory cases
Illustrative assumptions, not actual shipments. Neither case states a rate, a cut-off date or a transit time; those come from the live quote for the week you book.
Case 1 — an eastern factory shipping a full container. Assume a factory in Huizhou loading one 40-foot container for Manzanillo. Geography points to Yantian: the first mile is shorter and the truck does not cross the city. Ask for the Yantian quote first, then check whether the sailing you need is direct or transhipped and when its receiving cut-off falls. Only if the service that fits your target departure calls on the west side does a cross-city truck to Shekou or Chiwan become worth pricing — and then compare the two total costs, not the two ocean rates.
Case 2 — a western supplier shipping LCL. Assume a supplier in Bao’an sending a few cubic metres to Cartagena as LCL. Here the terminal follows the consolidation: what matters first is where the consolidator’s warehouse is and its receiving cut-off for the next consolidation, because the cargo is delivered to that warehouse, not to the quay. If the warehouse loads at Shekou or Chiwan, a Bao’an factory is well placed; if the only consolidation that fits your date leaves from Nansha, compare that first mile too. Our FCL vs LCL ocean freight guide explains when a shipment this size should stay LCL.
How to check Latin America services from Shenzhen
For a China → Latin America shipment, compare the live rotations available from Yantian, Shekou/Chiwan and nearby gateways. Confirm the named carrier, cut-off, direct or transhipment basis and destination terminal for the requested week; these details can change between sailings.
Nearby alternatives when Shenzhen doesn’t fit
Sometimes the right answer is a different port entirely:
- Guangzhou Nansha (南沙) — on the west side of the Pearl River estuary and worth comparing for factories in Foshan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai and southwest Dongguan.
- Xiamen — worth comparing for factories in Fujian province when its live service and total cost fit the shipment.
- Ningbo — can fit factories in central or eastern China, including Jiangsu, Zhejiang and the Shanghai region.
- Shanghai — can fit Yangtze Delta cargo or a South China shipment when a required live service is available there.
Do LCL consolidations run from Shekou or Yantian?
Both may be quoted. The choice depends on the consolidation warehouse, receiving cut-off, live sailing, transhipment plan and total first-mile plus ocean cost. Confirm the actual origin terminal for each booking.
Which terminal should your supplier use?
Three questions decide it:
- Where is the factory? East side (Longgang, Huizhou, eastern Dongguan) → Yantian. West side (Nanshan, Bao’an, western Dongguan, Zhongshan) → Shekou/Chiwan, Da Chan Bay or Nansha.
- What destination and live service? Check the named carrier’s current rotation, cut-off and transhipment plan.
- How urgent is the sailing? If your target ETD only exists at one terminal, that’s the answer — don’t force geography.
Once those three answers point to a terminal, the remaining decisions — FCL or LCL, which sailing, and what happens at the destination port — are the ones our ocean freight from China service covers. Send the factory address, cargo and target date, and we will quote the terminals that actually fit rather than a generic “Shenzhen”.
Frequently asked questions
Are Shekou and Shenzhen the same port? Shekou is one of the terminals of the Port of Shenzhen, in the western port area. A quote or bill of lading that only says “Shenzhen” can mean Shekou, Chiwan, Da Chan Bay or Yantian, so ask which terminal the booking is for before arranging trucking.
Is Yantian the same as Shenzhen port? Yantian is the main terminal in Shenzhen’s eastern port area, so it is part of the Port of Shenzhen — but it is on the opposite side of the city from Shekou and Chiwan, with its own cut-offs and services.
Are the Shekou and Yantian ports close to each other? No — they’re on opposite sides of Shenzhen. Yantian is in the east on Dapeng Bay and Shekou is in the west, across Shenzhen Bay from Hong Kong. Ask for first-mile quotes from the actual factory address because traffic and gate appointments affect the comparison.
Which port near Shenzhen handles Asia–Latin America services? Yantian, Shekou/Chiwan and Guangzhou Nansha can appear in quotations for this trade. Check the live carrier rotation, cut-off and direct or transhipment basis for the requested week.
Is there an alternative port to Shenzhen? Guangzhou Nansha is worth comparing for west-side factories. For central or east China, compare Ningbo and Shanghai; for Fujian factories, compare Xiamen. Use the factory address, live cut-off, transhipment plan and total cost.
Can I ship LCL from Shanghai directly to Cartagena? Yes — LCL consolidations to Cartagena run from Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. From south China origins, Shenzhen (Shekou for LCL) is a common start point; departure timing, Panama transhipment, deconsolidation, customs and the final address all change the door-to-door window, which we confirm on the quote. See our ocean freight to Buenaventura and Cartagena guide for the routing.
Do all Shenzhen container terminals have deep-water access? The terminals have different berth and vessel-handling profiles. Confirm the booked vessel, terminal and operational limits on the live service rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
The bottom line
Shenzhen is a cluster rather than a single terminal. Compare Yantian, Shekou/Chiwan, Da Chan Bay and nearby Guangzhou Nansha using the factory address, receiving cut-off, live sailing, transhipment plan and total cost. Ask for more than one origin quote when the factory can reasonably reach either side. For the broader south-China origin picture, see our shipping from Shenzhen guide, and for east China see shipping from Shanghai and Ningbo.
