Choosing between air and ocean freight is one of the first decisions every importer makes, and it shapes both your landed cost and your delivery date. There is no universally “better” mode — only the mode that fits a particular shipment. This guide breaks down the trade-offs so you can decide quickly.
The short answer
Use air freight when speed matters more than cost, your cargo is light or high-value, or you are replenishing fast-moving stock. Use ocean freight when you are moving volume, your goods are heavy or bulky, and your timeline allows a few weeks in transit. Most mature supply chains use both, switching mode by season and by SKU.
Transit time
Transit time is the most visible difference.
- Air freight from China typically clears in 3 to 8 days door to door, including pickup, customs and final delivery.
- Ocean freight runs 25 to 40 days door to door depending on the destination port and inland legs.
If a delay would cost you a sale, a production line, or a season, the premium for air is often cheaper than the lost revenue.
Cost
Air is priced on chargeable weight — the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Ocean FCL is priced per container, and ocean LCL is priced per cubic metre. As a rule of thumb, the heavier and bulkier the shipment, the more dramatically ocean wins on price. For a dense, low-value pallet, ocean can be a fraction of the air cost. For a small, urgent, high-value carton, the gap narrows and air becomes very competitive once you factor in faster cash recovery.
Reliability and risk
Ocean schedules are longer and more exposed to port congestion, blank sailings and weather. Air schedules are tighter and recover faster from disruption, but space can tighten sharply around peak season and major holidays. A good forwarder smooths both: holding allotments with carriers, booking early, and giving you honest visibility when the market is tight.
